Nederburg Edelrood 1993

Purchased at the time South African wines were once more allowed to be imported into the country and from memory at a price of $12-$15.

SA wines or at least the ones which used to reach our shores tended to have a mineral flavour with a tinge of iodine. They were an aquired taste and judging from the shelves of our wine shops nowadays, not one which has been popular with NZ wine drinkers. I think the main problem for importers is getting quality SA wines into the country at a price which matches Aust and NZ wines of the same standard.

The colour of the Edelrood was dark purple, light at the edges. The nose was smokey with no traces of oxidation. A very dry European style, it was pleasantly devoid of most of the mineral taste I was describing earlier. Perhaps the ageing process helped. The fruit flavour was subdued and definitely one to partake with food, preferably red meat, it was surprisingly drinkable for a 14 year old lower end of the market wine.

Another lost soul in the cellar as this was the last bottle.
