Mission Estate Chardonnay 2006
Though only in the cellar for a few months, white wines are generally not for long term keeping and to accompany a Sunday night chicken dish, this wine was chosen.
From the Hawkes Bay the wine is low to medium priced. It showed surprising complexity and balance. The oak treatment was quite restrained, but balanced with good fruit it gave out soft citrus falvours. The slight oiliness in the chicken dish bought out the flavour of the wine well.
Those that prefer the big vanilla/biscuity bold style of chardonnay may be a bit disappointed, but as the wine can be picked up below $15 it is very good value for money. The cellarmaster treatment is similar to more expensive wines with 9 months spent on the yeast lees and a portion undergoing malolactic treatment.
