Atarangi is known mostly for its red wines. The tasting notes from the vineyard on this vintage are described as such:-
Powerful, flavoursome red with plum, berry-fruit and mint plus a subtle seasoning of black pepper. Célèbre has been leaning more toward the Rhône in style over the last couple of years,
with Syrah and Cabernet now vying for position in the blend , each at 40% in this release.
Merlot, which ripens beautifully in Martinborough, makes up the remaining 20%.
Seven of us sampled this wine. NZ reds don't generally have as good cellaring potential as Australian or Europeans, so it was a pleasant surprise to find good fruit still showing through after being cellared for 8 years. The makers recommendation had a cellaring potential of just a couple of years, but that was definitely conservative. Very much in the class of a good aged french wine, it showed up well against several top Australian wines. Very enjoyable!
Current vintage is 2007 with a price around $32
