Primo Estate - Shiraz Sangiovese
Primo Estate are known for producing wines "out of the square" and not afraid to experiment. As well as the Primo label, they produce the Joseph range which are premium wines made in smaller quantities.
The first release of the Shiraz/Sangiovese variety was in 1997 and is a blend of old world Italian variety grapes with the fruity style of Australian shiraz. We enjoyed this wine very much with the Sunday lamb roast. Normally sangiovese is a very dry style, but the shiraz fruit integrated so well with a resulting cherry fruit flavour without the usual "plummyness" associated with 14% Aussie shiraz. It is however, as with most European style wines, a food wine and not for social sipping at a party.
The current vintage is 2004 however VinoFino of Christchurch have some 2003 still on their shelves at $26.45.
